so I finally saw endgame and in reflecting on it, 11 years of the MCU, Spider-man PS4 and Stan Lee's passing I wanted to collect my thoughts about it.

First off not going go into spoilers, but Endgame was amazing,I found myself welling up towards the end in one particular scene. Though there is more films in the MCU on the way, Endgame feels like a good bookend for the MCU, and although I still haven't seen Doctor Strange, Black Panther and Captain Marvel, the MCU has been a perfect tribute to Marvel-[aside dissapointingly from the lack of Fantastic 4 and X-men in it].

Although it's been about 7 months since Stan Lee passed away, at the time I was quite with university and only until about a few weeks ago, have I basically finished and been able to rest and gather my thoughts properly. Throughout my studies and in completing Fine Art I struggled at times to understand what I want to do with my life post university and whether I should move away from the art i did in my personal time before uni or evolve the work i've done whilst at university.

One of my first decisions upon initial refletcion on Stan's death was that for the remainder of my 365 challenge was to do not just marvel related but Spider-man sketches, I grew up with Spider-man and Batman mostly from there I branched out to other superheroes and their respective toys and cartoons, but from my love of Spider-man I drew, then later my own interpretations of Spider-man to then other characters batman, etc, eventually to conceptualising my own original characters, but from my hobby/pasttime of drawing superheroes, i did art at school and that led me to studying fine art at university.

Spider-man Homecoming and Spider-man PS4, both realised a near-perfect representation of spider-man, and though I was late to play Spider-man PS4 ( and still yet to finish), it helped me to greater understand how much this character, Marvel comics and Stan Lee have molded and shaped who i am as a person and my life.

Point is without Spider-man, Marvel (as well as DC comics) I wouldn't have become who i am now, I have Stan Lee to thank for that.

After recently coming across a thread on Reddit regarding artists tracing and citing credit/link sources, as well as often seeing on twitter or instagram people having their work being shared/posted without credit, etc I want to share my thoughts about the topic on tracing and citing and crediting sources, particularly with digital art and art shared via social media.

Me and my work:

As people may or may not know, I work heavily from reference images-I don't trace, despite heavily working from reference I believe that the work I create is my own and isn't neccessarily derivative of the reference images used.

When using reference images I've used them as a techical exercise of sorts to try to repleciate as close as possible-particularly with photos of animals, or to experiment with my drawing/overall art style as well as aiding me with certain aspects of like lighting, shadows, textures, poses or as basis for the composition.

I've only traced once as far as I can remember, only because I couldn't get the right proportions of what I was trying to sketch. I didn't go very far with that sketch and haven't used it in any capacity. I don't trace as a rule, because for me working free hand allows me to improve my overall sketching and further refine my line work, as well as improve and further refine amongst other things-proportions.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going to explain the overall situation as concisely as I can but I will link the orginal imgur post about the artist and their traced works.

Tracing:

A thread on Reddit was what prompted this journal. Essentially an artist on twitter who was popular within the subreddit's community was exposed for having traced alot of his works, especially those pertaining to the community. Some of his works appeared more traced than others, various paintings/sketches would line up perfectly with the orginal source photo.

One of his newest works is what prompted the thread. Whilst people could see that he had added to the work, the rest seemed to be completely traced.

People within the subredit and on twitter began to discuss the ethics behind tracing and how it was unfair and disengenous for the artist to claim his works original and totally his own. Although there were some individuals who said that it was obvious and clear that he had traced. The artist as far as I gather has defended his work and denied use of tracing.

I can understand how tracing can be helpful for people, but it's not right to trace a work in it's entirety and claim it as your own wholly original unique work and sholdn't be used for professional/paid work or even shown as a demonstrative work for use in a portfolio for example.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crediting, Sources:

After having some time to think about the thread, I came to the decision that I was not neccessarily being clear if I worked from reference images and therefore I should state if I did, but after thinking about it some more as well as various responses on the thread, I came to the conclusion that I hadn't been misleading but should still make sure to link/source/credit artists/art/photos where possible.

Something I've come across various times on twitter and instagram is someone's work being reposted without credit to the creator as well as without their permission. Obviously when reposting someone else's work you shold properly credit them and as a general rule ask their permission to repost ( not the same as retweeting). Lastly it's  not fair to the creator and to their work to crop/edit out their own watermark/signature from the work when reposting too and to subsequently claim the work as your own.

63 videos recorded with my camera probably another 20 with my phone

303 digital sketches
10 ink sketches

Probably about 20 paintings and just about halfway through my second year of university, doing Fine Art

Still got a bunch of side projects to finish or even start.

It's been a good year.

Happy holidays and to a new year

So a year ago today, on a whim I decided to challenge myself and do a daily sketch challenge for a year which would result in a total of 365 sketches.

I started the challenge for various reasons;

1. train myself to be more consistently productive and to when I upload work
2.gain experience with digital art programs, photoshop,GIMP,etc
3.try various ideas to find inspiration for other work
4.speed up my production process and to become more efficient with my methodology
5.further develop my own artistic style
6.see if its worth using digital media further down the road with my university work.

Regarding the challenge I gave myself some rules to go by, which over time I sortof broke;

1.all sketches had to be done and uploaded within the day with no prior prep    ( I couldn't start the sketch the previous day and finish it on the day)
2.all digital sketches from scratch, no tracing                                        (with Inktober being the exception to this)
3.all sketches would be "finished"                                                        ( I sortof went against this with some rough looking sketches, but that was the point for those)
4.each sketch/day would be a single sketch rather than a sketchdump       (again I sortof went against a few times)
5.each month would have s different theme  ( at some points ealry on thinking up ideas within a theme was difficult so I decided it was best just to do themes for short periods until I thought of a different idea)

Overall I've used GIMP 2.8, Autodesk Sketchbook for Android, Clip Studio Paint EX for digital sketches and in October ink on paper, my digital sketches varied in resolution until December 8th (sketch no. 181) where I decided to start sketching in 4K (DCI 4K) -4096x 2160 at 600dpi

Intially I did my digital sketches with a WizardPen Genius Tab tablet then, from November 16th (sketch no. 159) I started using a Wacom Intous Pro S tablet

sketches no. 1-94 done in GIMP
sketches no. 95-112, 114, 144-152, 154-365(?) done in Clip Studio Paint EX
sketches no. 113 & 153 done in Autodesk sketchbook for android
sketches no. 115-143 done in ink on paper for Inktober

Right now I'm still workinng on sketch no.294, not sure how long it'll take me to get all the remaining 81 sketches done and if they'll be done in Clip Studio, since I have since downloaded 2 other programs that I might try out at some point (Krita & Mischief)

side note: I don't have any update/news regarding requests, but once this challenge is complete they will be my primary focus.
